There are a number of generic brands which are meant to replace the brand-name Viagra by Pfizer, and Malegra-200, one of the generic treatments for erectile dysfunction is manufactured by the Indian company, Sunrise Remedies.

Erectile dysfunction is the condition where these treatments apply to, generic or not. When we say erectile dysfunction or ED, we are referring to the inability of a patient to have and maintain the erectile response, even if they want to. Treatments containing Sildenafil Citrate like Viagra and generic treatments like Malegra by Sunrise Remedies are effective in helping patients regain their erectile function even for several hours (since there is not yet a cure for ED).

HOW IT WORKS:

Sildenafil Citrate (SC) works primarily as a PDE5i which has a direct action of inhibiting the neurotransmitter so that the cGMP produced upon sexual stimulation may not be eliminated just yet. cGMP is the one responsible for the erectile response, as its presence promotes vasodilation and smooth muscle relaxation so that blood flow is increased in the penile tissue. SC inhibits PDE5 from disintegrating the cGMP present, therefore erection is maintained. The action of SC as an API can last up to an average of 4 hours. But even if SC promotes erectile response, sexual stimulation is still required.

Since the clinical action of SC on the host (as a PDE5i and an augmenting agent for cGMP) is determined, patients should expect that SC-containing medication will help improve their erectile response. As the internet pharmacies put it, SC meds can “boost the sexual wellness” of the users. SC drugs work as an enhancer of the erectile response and do not cause spontaneous erections without the presence of any sexual stimuli, so users have to be stimulated first before the drug can take effect.

DOSAGE:

The typically prescribed initial dose for Sildenafil-containing medication is 100 mg, but it may be increased to 200 mg depending on the response of the patient; it may also be decreased to 25 mg depending on SC’s effectiveness and patient tolerance. It is also advised that the patients should take SC medication 1 hour before the intended sexual activity. Because SC is not an intended cure for ED, but only a treatment for ED, it does not have a recommended length of therapy. SC treatment, though, is being considered to be implemented for long-term, as clinical trials for long-term use for SC-containing drugs prove promising.

SIDE EFFECTS:

In a study conducted for determining the long-term effects of SC in patients, there were reported side effects for the drug, although they were not quite prevalent in the tested population, and accounted for only 3.8% of the 979 participants. The most common side effects brought about by SC in patients were headache and dyspepsia. Other side effects noted on patients under SC mediation are rhinitis, flushing, abnormal vision, dizziness, mild palpitations, moderate tachycardia, conjunctivitis, and photophobia, although these reported side effects were not prevalent.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:

Sildenafil Citrate pills should never be taken in conjunction with other ED medication, so Malegra-200 is also contraindicated to be taken with other ED meds. It is highly contraindicated for ED meds to be taken along with other ED meds since the interaction among these meds may exacerbate the side effects. Other drugs contraindicated to SC meds are nitrates, antibiotics, HIV meds, blood pressure medication, and antifungal medications.
